The FSU College of Social Work hosted a virtual Courageous Conversations panel during Hispanic Heritage Month on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, to discuss the social work values of dignity and human rights. Panelists discussed utilizing a strengths-based approach when working with Latine and Hispanic populations with the aim of empowerment, self-determination, and culturally appropriate care. This event is a part of the Courageous Conversations event series, which explores social issues through discussions with FSU alumni.
Presenters:
Kristina Finch (MS '13, BA '06), Associate Director of Professional Development, Florida Institute for Child Welfare
Kristina Finch is the associate director of Professional Development at the Florida Institute for Child Welfare, housed at the College of Social Work. An alumna of the FSU Anne's College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences and a Miami native, Kristina completed her MS in curriculum and instruction in 2013 and has spent her career focused on enhancing education and training in the fields of secondary education, adult and workforce education, and state government. She recently completed a graduate certificate program in instructional design and eLearning from the University of Central Florida. Before joining the institute, Kristina served for four years as the Director of Professional Development for the Florida Department of Management Services. She was also a former program manager at Tallahassee Community College, leading education and training efforts over programs addressing adult education, migrant education, offender re-entry, and workforce needs.
Maria-Paula McIntyre (BS '18), Community Engagement Coordinator, FSU Center for Leadership and Service
Maria-Paula McIntyre serves as the Program Coordinator for EngageTLH and the Community Ambassador Program. She enjoys building relationships that support developing community-led initiatives. During her time at the center, she has been dedicated to many programs, starting with youth mentoring and currently partnering with non-profit organizations across Tallahassee. Maria-Paula was born in Cali, Colombia and loves growing in her identity as a Latina in the United States. She commits to embracing her roots and, in her free time, enjoys practicing mindfulness, learning new languages, searching for music from other countries, reading Igbo literature, and drinking tea.
MODERATOR: Bolivar Aguirre (MSW '12), Clinical Social Worker and Therapist, Buena Vista Counseling Services & Adjunct Professor, FSU College of Social Work
Bolivar is an FSU alumnus and currently an adjunct at the College of Social Work. He is a licensed clinical social worker and therapist with a background in Child Protective Services. Throughout his time working in child welfare, he has gained a great appreciation for helping children and families meet their wellness goals. In his practice, he counsels individuals from all walks of life.
