Regency England is often imagined as a world of elegant balls, polished manners, and aristocratic refinement. But the reality of personal hygiene during the early 19th century was far more complicated and often far less glamorous than modern audiences expect.
During the Regency period (1811–1820), daily bathing as we know it today was uncommon, largely due to limited plumbing and cultural attitudes toward water and health. Many people relied on sponge baths using basins and cloths rather than full immersion bathing. Clean linen played a crucial role in hygiene, with people frequently changing undergarments to absorb sweat and oils from the skin. Perfumes, powders, and scented pomades were also widely used to mask odors.
