(9 Jan 1976) A seventy-two year old professor of law, Aparicio Mendez, was sworn in on Wednesday (1 September '76) as Uruguay's new president and one of his first actions was to order the suspension of the political rights of a number of prominent politicians. He succeeds Alberto Demicheli, who was named provisional president after the armed forces toppled president Juan Maria Bordaberry on June the 12th.
It's widely believed that although Mendez holds the presidential post, real power will continue to be held by the armed forces chiefs. The new president's order to suspend the powers of leading politicians includes everyone who ran for president or vice president in the last two elections in Uruguay, including former President Bordaberry
