Untouchable - Rewilding the city centre - Participatory Action Research

Untouchable reclaims a piece of land as a non-human sanctuary, where humanity acknowledges its inability to exert absolute control over shared spaces. After identifying a site with the greatest potential for monetisation in the heart of Ljubljana, the ambitions of the capital are rejected in favour of preservation.

Yet this does not imply (only) cultural preservation but instead expands the project into natural preservation and engages with urban rewilding practices. It proposes to protect the site from human interventions and return it to nature by allowing solitary bees, other pollinators, and pollinator-friendly plants to flourish. In the process, it addresses a larger crisis of wild pollinators disappearing from increasingly concrete-paved city centres with an absence of appropriate vegetation.

The project reclaims space and delineates the area of protection by erecting a series of “bug hotels,” a large sign reading “REWILDING,” and an informational board that doubles as a barrier preventing unwanted human access.
