The Terror of St Michael’s Lighthouse A Whateley Account | TRUE Horror Stories
“Gods curse you, Whateley! Curse you to Hades! Get back, you devils! Back I say! Oh God! Oh Lord! Help my poor soul!”. These were the final, agonizing words of Howard Marsh, bellowed out in a feverish panic as he was dragged shrieking and pleading into the gloomy waters of the Irish Sea. These utterances haunt the narrator’s every waking hour, assaults his slumbering mind nightly, and erode any chance of peaceful sleep.
This is the full account of that lonely, wind-wrecked evening shared with Marsh in the doomed, crumbling edifice that was once St. Michael’s Lighthouse. The lighthouse, located on a remote stretch of Cumbrian coast, was scheduled for demolition. The narrator, referred to as Whateley, travels to the desolate location only to find that the structure sits on a tidal isle, accessible only at low tide via a slippery causeway known locally as the Devil’s Spine.
Driven by curiosity and dread, Whateley delves into local records, uncovering a history of blasphemers, unholy Pagan rites, and the terrifying legend of Long Polly associated with the island, which was once called the Witch Mound. Strange, musical whisperings, described as "Tekeli-li," were occasionally reported emanating from the rocks.
Marsh, who had previously mentioned family connections to the sinister towns of Innsmouth and Kingsport, greets Whateley completely transformed. He has grown strikingly tall, with large, wide, unblinking eyes that shine like opals, emitting an awful fishy smell and communicating through sickening, liquescent words.
