This week's Historical Clarinet Diaries focus is the Baermann-Ottensteiner Clarinet. Emily is playing a 2006 copy of the very special 1875 instrument by the Munich maker Georg Ottensteiner. The original instrument was made for the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, principal of the Meiningen and Bayreuth orchestras and the inspiration for Brahms's Clarinet Quintet, Trio and Sonatas.
The Baerman-Ottensteiner Clarinet was developed by Ottensteiner and the clarinetist Carl Baermann (1810-1885), a leading teacher and player in Munich during the mid-19th century. It is the predecessor of the modern German-System (Oehler) clarinet.
Carl Baermann is the son of Heinrich Baermann (1874-1847), for whom Carl Maria von Weber wrote his clarinet Concertos and Quintet. In c. 1860 Carl Baermann wrote the Baermann Clarinet School, a teaching method designed specifically for the Baermann-Ottensteiner clarinet. The school is still used by players and teachers today. The piece in this video is taken from the 2nd Division of the school.
Clarinet: Baermann-Ottensteiner system clarinet in Bb by Schwenk und Seggelke, Bamberg (2006) after Georg Ottensteiner, Munich (1875). THe original instrument, previously played by Richard Mühlfeld, is in the Meiningen Museum. This clarinet is made of boxwood with nickel silver keys.
Boxwood & Brass clarinetist Emily Worthington is challenging herself to record a piece of unusual repertoire on a difference clarinet every week!
