A motor spins nonstop — yet the output moves in perfect stop-and-go steps, with a dead-still pause between each one. This mechanism shows exactly how that happens.
These are intermittent motion gears, sometimes called mutilated gears, engineered with teeth missing from part of their circumference to create precisely timed mechanical pauses. In both designs shown here, the driving gear rotates continuously at a constant speed while only partially toothed.
When the toothed sections align, they mesh normally, driving the output forward. But when the teeth run out, motion stops — and to prevent the driven gear from free-spinning out of control, a smooth, curved locking surface engages, geometrically locking the output perfectly in place until the teeth come back around to start the next cycle.
From an engineering perspective, it's a brilliant solution that achieves reliable stop-and-go indexing purely through gear geometry, with no clutches, brakes, or electronic timing — widely used in indexing tables, packaging machinery, mechanical clocks, and film projectors.
