Kuchela Dinam (Kuchela Day) is one of the significant observances of Hindu devotees in Kerala State. It is celebrated on the first Wednesday of the Malayalam month of Dhanu, which usually comes in mid-December. It commemorates and honours the legendary friendship and selfless devotion of Kuchela to Lord Krishna.
Kuchela, whose real name was Sudama, was a childhood friend and classmate of Sri Krishna. He was a very poor Brahmin who did not even had a good clothing to wear, whereby he got the nickname Kuchela meaning 'one who wears bad cloths'. Later in his life, Sudama's wife urges him to go to Lord Krishna so that Bhagavan might help them. Because of his poverty he could only offer a handful of old beaten rice (avil) to Krishna. But Krishna welcomed him heartily and received the avil with sincere happiness. The Lord blessed Sudama and relieved him of all his miseries.
