Carole Pope was a dynamic activist and founder of Our New Beginnings (ONB), a Portland transitional and alternative sentencing residential program for women involved with the criminal justice system. Active from 1980-1992, ONB demonstrated in its success that holistic, community-centered support and rehabilitation can resist cycles of recidivism and preserve and restore families and communities impacted by incarceration. After Carole passed away in 2013, her materials were donated to the Portland State University Library. By gathering narratives of individuals involved with ONB, the Carole Pope Legacy Project builds upon that collection to create an invaluable, multimedia resource for scholars, activists, and providers creating and advocating for meaningful alternatives to incarceration.
