In 1968, three men from the UK founded H||H, a company whose products included amps, tape echoes, mixing desks, etc. They're still in business, though now owned by Laney amplification.
Their guitar amp range was an instant success, due to their modern transistor sound, compared with the existing valve amp technology. Pubs up and down the land had the PA mixer version of the guitar amp I demo here, and they were tough. Their first guitar amp was the IC-100, the IC standing for integrated circuit, those small eight-legged chips that still make up a large proportion of hi-fi audio.
Most guitarists would nowadays walk straight past them, due to the "valve is best" thinking. Of course, due to how valves distort, the output is consonant and musical, whereas transistors distort odd harmonics, which are more dissonant. You can get a much cleaner sound with transistors however, with some styles more adept to transistors..
For balance, I possess four valve amplifiers, and four transistor ones.
Besides which, any valve amp that is recorded and played back goes through thousands of transistors before it reaches your ears!
Enjoy a slice of 70s transistor-ness and subscribe to my channel!
