Building a Traditional Mongol Yurt in 10 Minutes ⏱️ | Nomadic Secrets Revealed!
Today, I'm in Xilingol, Inner Mongolia, and everyone here is preparing for the upcoming Nadam Festival, which will showcase how Mongolians set up a yurt. I need to explain what yurts are, their structure, and their cultural significance. Let me start with the basic definition. A yurt is a traditional portable dwelling used by nomadic groups in Central Asia, particularly in Mongolia. In Mongolian, it is called "ger." The ger is recognized by UNESCO as a symbol of intangible cultural heritage, celebrated during festivals like Naadam. Designed for portability, a ger can be dismantled and packed onto animals in less than an hour, facilitating seasonal migration with livestock. Men manage the heavy framework, securing the toono crown and roof poles, while women lay and fasten the felt layers and arrange the interior.
Layers of sheep’s wool, felt along with waterproof canvas or animal hides, provide insulation against extreme temperatures.
During Naadam festivals, communal ger-raising demonstrations celebrate cultural heritage. The process is time-sensitive, especially during harsh weather, so teamwork is essential for efficiency. In nomadic life, reciprocity is key; helping others with their ger guarantees assistance in return when needed, making a neighbor your first helper. A stove sits at the center for heating and cooking, with smoke escaping through the chimney. Thanks for watching and smash the like button...
