Preamble:
A composer has left extracts of their name throughout this musical puzzle! Listen to the medley, paying close attention to ‘unsung-sung details’ [i.e. the lyrics], before following the instructions below, to uncover the composer’s name.
Step 1.
List the clues (i.e. songs/extracts) in the order they are heard.
1. ____*
2. ____
3. ____
4. ____
5. ____
6. ____
7. ____
8. ____
9. ____
10. ____
11. ____**
12. ____**
13. ____
14. ____
*Songs with identical cut or replaced songs, reprises or variations, and are therefore excluded
**Songs with near-identical cut or replaced songs, reprises or variations, and are therefore included
Step 2.
Group the clues from Step 1 into the following categories:
a. Seven clues with lyrics that share a theme. This theme could be described by the rubrics ‘___ and ___’. Example: ‘Hot and Cold’ or ‘H and C’.
b. Two clues with lyrics which are red herrings, i.e. they share a different, but similar, theme to that described in Step 2a.
c. Three clues with titles that can be read as cryptic instructions.
d. Two clues which are classical music extracts.
Step 3.
Consider the significance of the medley’s order and relate it to a relevant musical. Find the average ‘time’ expressed throughout the musical’s lyrics. Relate this answer to a relevant musical.
Step 4.
‘‘Apply’ the clues from Step 2c to the rubric’ from Step 2a, leaving two ‘words’ that sound phonetically like two letters. Combine these two letters to form a two-letter word. Example: ‘Hot and Cold’ becomes ‘_o_ and _ol_’, making ‘loo’ when combined.
Step 5.
The answers from Steps 3 and 4 should clue you to a relevant song.
Step 6.
As in Step 4, ’apply’ Step 2c to the clues in Step 2d, in some fashion. Then, ‘reapply’ the result to a relevant word to the answer in Step 5, which must be rearranged beforehand.
Step 7.
To solve this puzzle, answer with the first name of the composer reached in step 6.
