🧾 The quirk in one line
UK pension schemes apply tax relief in one of two ways:
• Net pay — relief is automatic, taken before tax is calculated. You get the full amount.
• Relief at source — your provider only adds the 20% basic rate. Higher-rate (40%) taxpayers have to claim the extra 20% themselves. Additional-rate (45%) taxpayers claim 25%.

If you're on relief at source and you don't claim, you're leaving money on the table every single year. Good news: you can usually backdate claims up to 4 tax years, so it could be a significant lump sum.

✅ How to check which method you're on
• Payslip — pension shown in the deductions section before tax? → net pay (you're fine)
• Pension statement — contributions topped up by 20%? → relief at source (claim the rest)

✅ How to claim the extra
• Self-assessment tax return, or
• Contact HMRC directly (online, phone, or letter)
