The Assam Regiment was raised in India during the Second World War in response to the growing threat from Imperial Japan. It would go on to be one of the only units to serve throughout the Burma campaign (1942-45).
Its 1st Battalion played a key role in delaying the Japanese advance on Kohima in April 1944, crossing 70 miles (113km) of mountainous terrain in the wake of a fierce encounter with the invading forces at Jessami.
Join Charlotte Carty as she charts the Assam Regiment’s journey from its formation in Shillong in 1941 to Rangoon in Burma in 1945.
