Newcastle produced just 0.64 xG at the other end but still had a plethora of chances, with Guimaraes hitting the post and Wissa, Botman, Woltemade and Guimaraes again going close to bringing the Magpies back on terms. City had further chances of their own as Reijnders, Silva and Cherki all tested Pope and the hosts' defence, but another breakthrough would finally come towards the end of stoppage time when Cherki combined with Ait-Nouri to slot home their second goal. As a result, Pep Guardiola's side take a two-goal advantage into February's second leg at the Etihad Stadium, and EFL Cup holders Newcastle have it all to do if they're to avoid elimination in the north west, with a return to Wembley still within their grasp.
