From a historical perspective, cotton was originally picked by hand. During the mid-1940’s, it was the International Harvester Company that produced the first successful commercial mechanical cotton picker. Unfortunately, it did not work well in the South because when it rained the machine frequently got stuck in the mud. Manual labor was still needed.

Once the bolls start to crack open, the fluffy cotton starts to push out of the covering. The cotton dries & fluffs up before being ready for harvesting. The dry cotton was simply pulled from the bolls by hand & stored until the seeds were ready to be removed from the raw cotton.

John Daniel Rust realized that his cotton picker was not marketable, & during World War II he redesigned his entire machine. Rust lacked the financial resources to build his machine until he received an offer from Allis Chalmers to produce Rusts machine using his patents. Rust's improved cotton picker design went into production by the Allis Chalmers company at the end of World War Two.

By 1942 IH had their first workable cotton picker on the market. The H-10-H was IH's first successful cotton picker.

In 1948 IH's M-12-H McCormick-Deering model cotton picker was introduced. This cotton picker used a Farmall M tractor as a motive base. The driver & cotton picker sat on the rear of the tractor & the tractor was driven backwards.

IH BUILT one row cotton pickers for the smaller frame Farmall tractors such as the B. However, the vast majority were built to mount on the mid-frame size tractors such as the Farmall H through the 460 series & the large frame size tractors such as the Farmall M through the 560 series.

SpecCast made a great big one in diecast metal. It’s a 1:16th scale farm tractor for the Red Power Roundup in 2018.

A beautiful McCormick International 314 low drum 1-row cotton picker mounted on a 1953 Farmall Super M tractor.

SpecCast did an amazing job replicating these parts on top of the Farmall Super M tractor. A tractor they have not released by itself before or since they made this Cotton Picker. & true to their agreement with Red Power, they haven't released the cotton picker on another tractor either. Making this piece a very limited collectible item.

Prominent manufacturers making cotton pickers were International Harvester, Allis-Chalmers, & much later John Deere.

Today cotton pickers have advanced to 8 row pickers with machine mounted module builders (balers) to improve efficiency in the field. This modern-day advancement has eliminated the dumping & the module building process & allows the farmer to pick & build the modules right on the same machine & then easily transport them off to the gin.

Future improvements in picking machines, & hybrid plants are in cottons future. & who knows maybe someday they will invent a “cotton combine” that picks & gins the cotton in the field resulting in clean processed baled cotton ready for shipment to the textile mill & binned cotton seed to sell for cottonseed oil or other products.

Cotton growing & harvesting have come a long way in the several thousand years since man planted the first cotton seed.
