The Battery Fabrication and Characterization User Facility, or Battery Lab, is an open user facility designed to allow researchers from academia and industry to work with experts in the nation’s most complete, customized battery research user facility. Users at the lab create and characterize batteries ranging from one-off coin cells to multi-cell batches of 18650 (AA-style) or 5Ah prismatic pouch cells (laptop-style). The facility is designed to meet a defined industry need for pilot-scale battery fabrication, characterization and testing for grid storage, transportation, and consumer products.
The Energy Institute’s new facility will provide critical infrastructure for the characterization, scale-up, and testing of existing and next-generation energy storage materials and devices. The facility will create new capabilities for in-situ characterization of battery materials and devices under working conditions. This infrastructure investment is key to achieving the breakthroughs needed to make both electric vehicles and grid storage viable at all the scales needed for the future. Best of all? Battery Lab users maintain complete control of their intellectual property.
The Battery Lab is administered by the University of Michigan with generous support from Ford Motor Company and the Michigan Economic Development Council. The Battery Lab will be an important base for the University of Michigan R&D efforts as a partner in the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR). It will also provide new capability to support the vehicle electrification thrust of the CERC-CVC program. See more at http://energy.umich.edu/project/battlab
