রবীন্দ্রনাথের ‘চোখের বালি’ অভিনয় করে অমরেন্দ্রনাথ দত্ত একবার শেষ চেষ্টা করলেন ঘুরে দাঁড়ানোর; কিন্তু সে চেষ্টা ফলবতী হল না। মিনার্ভা আর ক্লাসিক একসঙ্গে চালাতে গিয়ে দেনার দায়ে নিঃস্ব হয়ে গেলেন বাংলা রঙ্গমঞ্চের কালাপাহাড় অমর দত্ত। সবাই যে যার মত অন্য মঞ্চে কাজ নিয়ে সরে পড়ল, ব্যতিক্রম নয়নমণি। সে অভিনয়ই ছেড়ে দিল। এদিকে ছাত্রদের প্রবল বিরুদ্ধতায় বঙ্গভঙ্গ বিরোধী আন্দোলন এক অভাবনীয় উত্তেজনা তৈরি করেছে সারা বাংলা জুড়ে। এমনটা যে ঘটবে, তা ব্রিটিশ প্রভুরা কল্পনাতেও আনতে পারেননি। স্কুল কলেজ সব বয়কট করে ছাত্ররা দিনরাত পথে; দোকালে দোকানে পিকেটিং। প্রকাশ্য সভায় স্বয়ং সুরেন্দ্রনাথ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় একদিন অপমানিত হলেন ছাত্র ও যুবকদের হাতে।
