Story 425 — “The Shadow Stage”
In 2007, in the small town of Umber Falls, Vermont, this house belonged to Arthur and Elena, and their two kids, Sam and Lily.

They bought it for the deep, light-proof basement. It became Arthur’s "theatre of light" — where he and Sam spent winters cutting intricate silhouettes from black cardboard, the house always flickering with the giant, silent shadows of heroes and dragons.

Summer, 2007. A Saturday.

Arthur stands by the grill, a pair of fine scissors in his pocket. Elena brings out cold lemonade. Grandma and Grandpa sit at the picnic table with the kids. The old maple tree stands tall, the grass is a little sunburned, an old Volvo wagon sits by the garage — but none of that matters.

It’s just a happy day.

In 2012, the basement is a professional-grade shadow puppet studio.

Sam is in middle school, obsessed with light refraction. Lily is a star in the youth choir. The lawn is greener, a new stone path leads to the workshop. Arthur bought a newer truck.

The house is still full of life.

By 2019, the spotlights are burnt out and the silhouettes are torn.

Sam is away at film school. Lily is a senior, already packing for a school in Chicago. Most weekends it’s just Arthur and Elena.

Arthur still uses the same grill.

Elena looks at the white screen and says, “The shadows are still there, but the characters have all left the room.”

In 2026, the house is gone.

In its place in Umber Falls stands a Starbucks.

A parking lot. Green umbrellas. People scroll through bright digital screens, never knowing that this used to be a home where a family learned that even in the dark, you can create something magical.
