Judge limits testimony of FBI profiler in Kouri Richins murder trial

Описание: A judge on Wednesday began deciding which expert witnesses will be allowed to testify at the upcoming murder trial of Kouri Richins, as attorneys argued over whether the science behind several proposed experts meets Utah’s legal standards.

Richins is accused of poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, with a lethal dose of fentanyl in 2022 and later writing a children’s book about grief. The trial was scheduled to begin in February.

Under Utah law, expert witnesses must meet a legal threshold showing their opinions are reliable, relevant, and helpful to a jury. Judges act as gatekeepers, excluding testimony that could mislead, confuse or unfairly prejudice jurors.
