On one of the most uninspiring winter days imaginable—flat light, no colour, freezing cold—it felt like there was nothing worth photographing. But instead of packing up, I made a gameplan.
In this video, I show how I approach woodland photography when conditions are at their worst. No dramatic light. No seasonal colour. Just quiet forests and difficult choices. I explain why I switched to black and white, why I chose a square format, added subtle grain, and how I challenged myself to find three images that would work together as a triptych.
This isn’t about chasing perfect conditions. It’s about adapting your mindset, simplifying your approach, and making photographs when most people would walk away.
If you enjoy slow, considered nature photography and want practical ideas for shooting in dull winter conditions, this video is for you.
In this video you’ll see:
How to photograph woodlands on grey, colourless winter days
Why black and white works when colour fails
*Using a square crop and grain for mood and cohesion
Building a triptych from a single walk
A calm, methodical approach to difficult conditions
Sometimes the best photographs come from the days we least expect.
