Professor Andrew Urban of Rutgers University surveyed the different methods and approaches that historic homes and sites have taken during the past two decades, to interpret and exhibit the lives of laborers and migrants. He discussed the William Trent House’s ongoing research into wage laborers who worked for the house in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, and how their stories – as immigrants, young women, and working people in Trenton - can be connected to their employment as coachmen, domestic servants, cooks, and gardeners.
Andy Urban is a historian of migration, labor, consumerism, and empire and author of "Brokering Servitude: Migration and the Politics of Domestic Labor during the Long Nineteenth Century" (NYU Press, 2018).
