My journey to Desan Meadows starts from Kalam Bazaar in Swat Valley, Pakistan. Most tourists visit this place on a 4x4 jeep because the road is extremely rough and difficult. It is mainly a jeep track, and very few tourists attempt this route on a bike. In this adventure, I decided to ride there solo on my motorcycle to experience and show the full journey to one of the most beautiful and largest meadows in Pakistan.

Before starting the ride, I had breakfast in Kalam Bazaar and filled my bike with fuel from the PSO petrol pump. The road to Desan Meadows begins from Kalam Village. This village has many beautiful and luxury hotels, so if you prefer a quieter place instead of staying in the main market, Kalam Village is a great option. Up to this point, the road is a proper RCC cement road and any vehicle can easily travel on it.

Once you pass Kalam Village, the real adventure begins. The road turns into a tough off-road jeep track filled with big stones and uneven surfaces. This was honestly one of the most difficult tracks I have ever ridden on a motorcycle. The first 10–15 kilometers are especially challenging because the large stones move under the tires, making it very hard to maintain balance and control of the bike.

After about one and a half hours of riding, the scenery begins to change. Beautiful meadows start appearing along the road, and you can see huts built by local shepherds. Since it was not peak tourist season during my visit, most of the huts and small tea points were closed, but the landscape was still incredibly peaceful and beautiful.

Further ahead there is a small stop where tourists usually take a break and enjoy tea or snacks. Jeep drivers often stop there as well to cool their vehicles. When I reached there, it was closed, but the view from that location was still amazing.

From that point onward the real climb toward Desan Top begins. The steep off-road climbs are extremely difficult, even for 4x4 jeeps. If it rains, many jeep drivers do not attempt the full climb and instead drop tourists below the top, where they have to continue on foot.

Since I was traveling alone, another challenge appeared when multiple tracks split along the way and it was difficult to decide which path to follow. Thankfully, with some experience and a bit of luck, I managed to choose the correct route and continued riding toward the top.

After almost three and a half hours of a very tough ride, I finally managed to take my bike all the way to Desan Top. Reaching the top made all the effort worth it. The view from Desan Top is absolutely breathtaking. From here you can see Kalam Valley, Ushu Forest, Green Top (Biyun Village), and even Bashai Meadows in the distance. The peaceful environment and the beauty of nature make this place truly special.

From Desan Top there is also a hiking trail that leads to Godar Lake. It usually takes about one to one and a half hours of hiking to reach the lake, and the lake can even be seen from the top. I planned to go there, but local people strongly advised me not to go alone because the weather was changing and there are also shepherd dogs in the area that can be dangerous. Because of this, I decided not to hike to Godar Lake and instead enjoyed the view of it from Desan Top.

For tourists visiting Kalam, jeep drivers usually charge around 8,000 to 10,000 PKR for a round trip to Desan Top. However, this price can change depending on the tourist season.

Overall, this was one of the toughest rides I have ever done, but it was also one of the most rewarding. The road is extremely challenging, but the views along the way are unbelievably beautiful. Desan Meadows is truly one of the hidden natural treasures of Swat Valley.

If you are visiting Kalam, I highly recommend adding Desan Meadows to your travel list. However, if you plan to ride here on a motorcycle, it is better not to come alone. Traveling with a group is always safer because the track is very difficult.
