'Friend' Getting Mad At Me For Not Getting Outraged Over Joke - Our Outrage Culture

My "friend" threatened our friendship, yelled at me for 15 minutes on the phone, appealed to Nationalism (we were both of Chinese origin, so I was supposed to be on his side), tried to make me feel like a victim ("Americans always make fun of Chinese because Chinese don't stand up for themselves, and if you don't get outraged, other minorities like African Americans will make fun of Chinese people too") and accused me of trying to seek "White people's" approval. All because I didn't get mad like he did over a joke that some not so intelligent, unsuccessful stand-up comedian said. That's our outrage culture in a nutshell, and I tell this story because he's not a liberal or a conservative, just a Chinese guy who's taking the idea of censorship and using it to promote one type of point of view. It's so unfortunate because I really looked up to him before his little crybaby outburst. When I use this analogy, I hope you see through me how someone who voted for Trump might see what our society is doing.
We have to stop this outrage culture. If people say something uneducated, call them out. If they still keep saying ignorant stuff, call them out again. But trying to prevent them from saying it, and then getting mad at people who don't seem to be as angry does nothing but make people who could listen to your arguments and reason dismiss you.
Free speech and marketplace of idea is the fundamental pillar of democracy.
John Stuart Mill in "On Liberty" said it so well:
If we prevent people from holding a certain view, we're assuming that we ourselves are "infallible." We don't know everything. Ideas, understandings of the world are constantly changing. No idea is infallible. What if the idea we're trying to suppress actually has some semblance of the truth as we continue to understand our world better.
On top of that, by examining different opinions, we get to the bottom of what is true and what isn't. Because by examining other people's views, I get to understand and find better credence for my own beliefs. And if I'm wrong, or they are wrong, we get to understand each other and change our views. Censoring speech and thought will never allow this growth to happen.
