The video describes a day hike in Umstead State Park located in Raleigh, NC. Nancy and I were visiting family over the Christmas break and we just needed to get out of the house and off our butts so I found this hike on the Hiking Project app. It is approximately 5.2 miles with about 300 ft. of elevation gain.
A few things to note about this hike...
1. It is heavily used by runners, bikers and people on horseback. It is a very wide trail and can easily accommodate the high traffic.
2. We made a detour off of this trail onto the Loblolly Trail. This is what you would call a more typical hiking trail. This is a point to point hiking trail approximately 3.3 miles. It cuts across the Turkey Creek trail so we decided to hike on it for about a mile until it intersects back with the Turkey Creek trail. I highly recommend this shortcut as you will experience a nice little waterfall and Davie's pond.
3. If you are going in a clockwise direction you will experience trying to cross a stream near the very end of the hike. There is a sign that says it can be impassable after heavy rains. During our hike, it was impassable and had to find a way to get across. I'm told it is not very deep and a runner we talked to said she simply takes off her shoes and crosses barefoot with the water being knee deep. Nancy and I found a couple of trees where we could easily cross. Just be mindful that there is some work you might have to do to cross over the stream.
It was a fun hike, not very strenuous but a wonderful relaxing trail. A great State Park to visit if you are in Raleigh, NC. Thanks for watching!
