The heat is on! Summer can be a dangerous season for your pet! Some of the most common health dangers include dehydration, heat exhaustion, and burnt or infected paw pads. Here are some ways to keep your dog safe and beat the summer heat.
1. Be careful on sidewalks or roads! The temperature at 77 F is 125F on asphalt! Skin destruction occurs in 60 seconds when it is this hot! Use the 7-second hand test ~ touch the surface you will be walking your dog on. If it is too hot for you ... it is too hot for your dog!
Other surfaces to be mindful of for your dog include bike paths, boat docks, boats, decks, parking lots, and sand.
2. Grab your gear! The following will help your dog stay healthy and cool in the summer heat. A dog water bottle. When outside whether or not you are exercising, give water breaks every 20 minutes.
A cooling vest will help keep your dog cool and protected from the sun. I saturate the vest in water and toss it in my freezer for 2-3 minutes max. This will give us approx. 90 minutes outside to exercise.
Dog booties help protect paw pads if walking on cooler grass is not an option. Make sure they fit properly.
3. Signs of heat exhaustion
Excessive panting, confusion or disorientation, vomiting or diarrhea and discoloration of tongue and gums.
