Though this video is knife related, you won't see many knives, instead, we take a look most of the steels being used for blades in the last 100 years.
Thank you to Larrin Thomas at Knife Steel Nerds https://knifesteelnerds.com/ for all his hard work in test and researching knife steels.
Here is a summary of some of the steels in the video:
(some opinions of common steels from https://knifeuser.com/ )
Being low-end stainless steel, the 420hc is a great steel for the low-entry knife, it has decent edge retention, good corrosion resistance, and it’s easy to sharpen, so the answer is Yes, its good for knives.
Is 420 hc good for a knife?
And in comparison with other low-end stainless steel, the 420hc comes in a good place, so owning a 420hc knife would be a smart decision for the money.
Is 440a stainless steel Good for knives?
The answer should be evident by now, and YES, it’s suitable for knives, but not the best, it has an excellent corrosion resistance, which is great for kitchen knives and diving knives and a high hardness with a 58hrc, in the same time its cheap and affordable.
IS 440c steel good for a knife?
440c is mid-range (that used to be a high-end) stainless steel that offers great corrosion resistance and great wear resistance, and will take a great mirror polish so the answer is YES, It’s a good steel for knives, but It has low toughness. Therefore I wouldn’t recommend it for hard usage (A boning knife, for example), it would be a great knife for the wet environment (Fishing knife or kitchen knife), and it holds an edge for long, which is great for an EDC knife carry.
But at the same time is not the perfect blade for a hunter, it has lower wear resistance and edge retention compared to the steels on the market, but it doesn’t mean it’s lousy steel for your knife.
Is 8Cr13MoV good knife steel?
It’s a low-end budget steel, that offers Decent Edge retention, corrosion resistance, hardness and wear resistance, for a very low price, so the answer is Yes compared to other budget steel knives, you can use it as an EDC knife, kitchen knife or hunting knife, but be prepared to take good care of it.
Is 9cr18MoV steel good for Knives?
In general, Yes its good for knives, but it depends on your usage, as we mentioned before, 9cr18MoV has a great corrosion resistance and good edge retention with a decent toughness so that it will be good for EDC knives, kitchen knives, but if you’re looking for a very tough knife for hunting or camping, and your knife might go trough hell of beating, I wouldn’t recommend it.
Is 14c28n steel good for Knives?
In general, the answer is YES, it’s a good steel for your knife, but it depends on which knife, if you’re talking about chef/kitchen knives, 14c28n would be a great pick thanks to its high corrosion resistance and edge retention, it would be great for an EDC knife with a normal usage, but if you’re looking for a tough steel for you outdoor experience camping, hunting or hiking, the 14c28n would be a good steel but no the best choice, there ‘re other steels with higher toughness (carbon steels for example) that would suit your usage.
Quick History: In fact, 14c28 is an upgrade of the 13C26 “Kershaw asked Sandvik to make their 13C26 steel more resistant to corrosion and the result was 14C28N”.
15n20 it’s very popular for Damascus knives, it has high toughness, and it’s great for edge retention, So yes it will be great steel for knives, despite it corrosion resistance, 15n20 is great for knife making, it’s easy to sharpen, easy to temper and heat, so if you’re a knife maker, you won’t find much trouble with it.
Is 154CM steel good for knives?
So after checking all the properties of the 154CM, the right answer would be Yes, it’s a good steel for knives, it has a great wear resistance, good hardness and toughness, and high corrosion resistance, it may be one of the best steel for knives, it’s not a high-end steel for nothing. Therefore many knife manufacturers are using it for all types of knives. It can be used for EDC knives, hunting knives, fishing knives, diving knives, and even kitchen knives.
Is N690CO steel good for knives?
An N690co steel knife offers great edge retention, excellent corrosion resistance, good toughness, and wear resistance, so the answer is, Yes.
The N690co will be great steel for your knife, especially if you’re a hunter or fisherman, it holds its edge, it’s perfect for corrosion resistance, and it’s easy to sharpen in the same time, which just great for skinning.
Of course, if you’re a kitchen chef or diver, it will work perfectly, but let me remind you it’s high-end steel; therefore N690co knives may look a bit overpriced.
