This video provides an overview of the Rice Archaeology Project at Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site. We begin with a brief introduction to the discipline of archaeology and an explanation of the subfield of plantation archaeology. Next, the project’s directors describe plans for future field work at the site, placing a particular emphasis on ways in which members of the community can get involved in the archaeological work. We also look towards the future with the 2022 excavation and the creation of internship programs that will pay community members and students to assist in archaeological work at Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site and Levi Jordan Plantation State Historic Site. To finish, viewers are offered the project’s contact information and encouraged to reach out and get involved.
