Queen Christina of Sweden (1626–1689) became queen at just six years old after the death of her father, King Gustavus Adolphus. Raised like a prince, she was educated in philosophy, languages, politics, and science unusual for royal women of her time.
She ruled independently, rejected traditional court expectations, and valued intellect over ceremony. Christina shocked Europe by refusing marriage and, later, by abdicating the throne voluntarily in 1654.
After leaving Sweden, she converted to Catholicism and spent the rest of her life as a patron of art and philosophy in Rome.
