Written by Alt J whilst on tour in Australia, 'Adeline' was included on their Relaxer album. Travelling in their Australian the tour bus, Alt J would sing the beloved Irish song ‘The Auld Triangle’ and this would eventually find its way into the song Adeline.

‘The Auld Triangle’ was written for the play The Quare Fellow which is set in Mountjoy Jail in 1950s Dublin. The prisoners only reference to time was the jingle jangle of the yard triangle wake them and to warn them of their next duty.

The lyrics of Adeline reference Tasmania with a feeling of longing and even menace. Van Diemen's Land was as far away as a prisoner under the colonial yoke could be sent and many an Irish prisoner was sent there including Ned Kelly’s father, Red Kelly.

Bush Gothic are curious about these links across time, across genres and oceans. Can these links help us understand who we are as Australians?
