The first 10 minutes of D-Day were far deadlier than most people realize.
When the first wave hit Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, U.S. troops walked straight into German machine-gun fire from the cliffs above.
Landing craft opened directly into kill zones, soldiers drowned under the weight of their gear, and the 352nd German Infantry Division — far stronger than expected — nearly stopped the entire Allied invasion in its tracks.
For those first minutes, D-Day was on the edge of complete failure.
If Omaha collapsed, the entire operation could have fallen apart… and World War II might have ended very differently.
