A type of huge tortoise known as the Aldabra giant tortoise lives on the island of Aldabra in the Indian Ocean. It lives in grasslands, mangrove swamps, dunes along the coast, and scrub. On the islands of the Indian Ocean, there used to be 18 different species of giant tortoises. Sadly, past unrestrained hunting and egg gathering led to the extinction of all species with the exception of the Aldabra giant tortoise. Despite a significant drop in population in the 19th century, the Aldabra giant tortoise has persevered to the present day. Currently, the Aldabra giant tortoise is classified as vulnerable.
