Hiring bias occurs as recruiters tend to hire people who are similar to themselves. This isn’t an over discrimination, but rather can occur through Unconscious Bias affecting candidates’ chances throughout the recruitment process.
CVs and resumes contain a lot of useful information for employers, but also are loaded with details that can signal race, class, and gender. Even the most self-aware hiring managers can turn away qualified candidates because of their Unconscious Bias.
Left unchecked and Hiring Bias can see companies building a workforce that will just replicate whatever demographics and tendencies that are already in place - to the company’s disadvantage.
Recruiters who think about diversity and inclusion in their recruiting processes gain access to a much larger pool of potential applicants than those who confine their efforts to a narrow demographic slice.
So what is Hiring Bias and how can you avoid it in your recruitment processes?
