One of our most popular (yet missed) species, has to be our Flatfish (Turbots and Flounder). They are masters of camouflage, and can only be spotted when they move or you spot their eyes above the sandy substrate.
When observing these species and behaviors they become a really interesting topic.
Are they swimming on the side?
One of the most interesting observations from visitors is when the ask this question. It is actually quite insightful as it is both visually true, but scientifically wrong......
Yes, its profile does seem like a fish except it has two eyes on one side!
However this is whats really happened!
Flatfish move one eye to the other side of their head during metamorphosis to adapt to a bottom-dwelling (benthic) life, allowing them to lie flat on the seafloor while keeping both eyes looking up for prey and predators. This evolutionary, asymmetric adaptation enables better camouflage, as the upward-facing side blends with the environment, while the downward-facing side becomes colorless.
(This means that their skulls will reform to go flat)
Color
We are always amazed by their pigment cells called chromatophores, adjusting their skin tone and pattern to match their surroundings in minutes, we have seen them adapt to coloured pebbles, and light & dark sand!
In the video we have some other facts, but the next time you visit the Aquarium, ask about these amazing species.
