Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or chamber. The air pressure is increased to three times higher than normal, allowing your lungs to gather more oxygen than would be possible breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure. This therapy increases the amount of oxygen in the blood, which can help promote healing, reduce inflammation, and improve overall health.
HBOT is used to treat several medical conditions, including decompression sickness (commonly known as "the bends" for divers), serious infections, wounds that won't heal due to diabetes or radiation injury, and carbon monoxide poisoning. It is also used in certain cases of sudden hearing loss and to treat certain types of brain injuries or neurological conditions.
During the treatment, you relax in a chamber while breathing pure oxygen. The increased pressure helps your blood carry more oxygen to organs and tissues in your body, promoting healing and reducing the effects of certain conditions. Treatment sessions typically last about 2 hours, and multiple sessions may be needed depending on the condition being treated.
