On May 8,1945, Europe saw the end of a prolonged and gruesome war. However, peace had yet to come to all corners of the world. Far to the East, the war still raged in the Pacific, and the Japanese seemed unyielding, even when the Allies were slowly retaking one island at a time.
Soon, the time came to plan a direct assault on the enemy's home islands. But drawing from previous experiences, the US foresaw the fighting would stretch into 1946.
Before the secret atomic bomb was considered to subdue the Japanese, the US Navy devised a plan of classic coastal naval bombardments aimed at dismantling the nation's industry.
Throughout July and August, the Allied fleets harassed many Japanese ports relentlessly, but they never expected how successful their attacks would be…
Heading: Burning Fury: The Unstoppable Destruction of the Japanese Homeland
It's March 9, 1945, and Tokyo is on the brink of a historical catastrophe—a devastating bombing raid that will forever be etched in history.
For years, the Imperial Japanese Army has valiantly defended its homeland against the relentless Allied Forces.
Tokyo…remained largely unscathed.
But the winds of change are blowing, and the balance of power is about to shift.
With the capture of Marina Island, the Allies gained a strategic foothold—an essential stepping stone toward their ultimate objective.
The stage is set for a high-stakes mission where heroes will rise, and the fate of nations hangs in the balance.
Operation Meetinghouse
Months earlier, in November 1944, a groundbreaking intelligence report landed in the hands of the Allied forces.
An aircraft managed to capture daylight aerial photographs of Tokyo city—giving an unprecedented glimpse into the heart of the enemy's stronghold.
These images unveil a city dotted with small factories nestled among residential areas, tirelessly churning out war supplies.
The information caught the attention of Major General Curtis LeMay, the newly appointed commander of XXI Bomber Command.
LeMay recognizes that traditional high-altitude precision bombing would yield limited results in the densely populated urban landscape.
He'd have to risk a daring low-altitude mission to inflict maximum damage.
But this tactic was a huge risk—it would leave the bombers dangerously exposed to Japanese anti-aircraft fire.
Nonetheless, LeMay takes a gamble, convinced that Japanese fire control tactics were feeble and the risk was worth it.
So he began planning a deadly air raid—a mission cloaked in the cover of darkness.
Something so big that it would require hundreds of planes and brave crews to execute.
This would be the largest air raid in history, with one goal: to reduce Tokyo to ashes.
And he called it "Operation Meetinghouse."
The Defense and The Offense
The Imperial Japanese military wasn't completely unaware of the imminent aerial onslaught.
The repetitive air raids on the coast made the enemy's intentions clear.
The Japanese knew a major night attack on Tokyo was looming.
So the defense was on high alert!
The responsibility of intercepting these attacks fell upon the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force's 10th Air Division.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the division focused its training programs on night operations.
The 53rd Air Regiment within the 10th Air Division started night drills to engage the enemy in the darkness.
The first major alarm within the Japanese barracks was raised on March 3.
The 10th division intercepted an American signal, revealing that the XXI Bomber Command was undergoing night flying exercises.
This was a signal that the Americans were now closer to executing their mission.
But little did they suspect; the Japanese were only a few days away from a horrifying experience.
