thank you for watching~
today i'm showing you how to make diy affordable reptile safe substrate. this can be used for a ton of species such as leopard geckos, crested geckos, ball pythons, crested geckos, etc.
you will need some aluminum baking pans, timberline top soil (or anything pesticide, fertilizer, manure free), a sieve, and an oven. that's it. all you need to do is sift all the wood chips out of the top soil, add rinsed play sand (rinsing removes any excess dust), and bake. you can bake at 250-350F (see edit) for a few hours and mix in between.
edit: cooking at 150-180F will suffice. this will kill the bacteria and dry it out more effectively. if you use a higher temperature, it will dry out the outer layer quickly but leave the inner layer wet. this may cause mold if you let it sit before using it. this exact thing happened to me when I was changing my ball python's substrate, but it was a good thing because it actually forced me to make it bioactive since the clean up crew could take care of the mold!
i also talk about what anaerobic soil is, and how to deal with it. please keep in mind, you need to replace your substrate every 3-6 months UNLESS it's bioactive. yes, top soil can be used for bioactive enclosures!
