No More Conflicts! How Burkina Faso’s Fodder Cultivation is Changing the Game. Burkina Faso has made history as the first African country to implement large-scale fodder cultivation for livestock.
The Minister of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources (MARAH) Commander Ismaël Sombié visited a 10 ha fodder production in the sylvo-agro-pastoral farm of Santa Ernest Traoré, in the rural commune of Kourinion on Saturday October 14, 2023.
Accompanied by the Secretary General of MARAH, the Coordinator of PRAPS 2-BF and several other actors, theMinister SOMBIÉ toured the farm, guided by the host of the day and head of the Kourinion canton.
Fodder production has a history with the Chief. Considered as madness at first by some inhabitants of the locality, it has become a passion for the Chief of Kourinion who aims for thirty hectares of surface area of several fodder speculations (panicum, brachiaria, cowpea, etc.)
"I am overjoyed. This is a first and this visit comes after several years of hard work and above all quality work," said this modern producer, who secures livestock feed for his own animals as well as for other breeders during the lean season.
During this visit, Santa Ernest Traoré thanked PRAPS 2-BF which now allows him to have enough fodder for his animals and to sell the surplus to the shepherds who pass through his locality. His goal is to have a harvest every three or four months of the year.
