Rich and Smoky! || Nikka Yoichi Single Malt Japanese Whiskey REVIEW

Описание: This Japanese single malt should be rich and smoky!

This is one of Nikka Whisky’s core malt products, with the other two being the Miyagikyo and Taketsuru. It’s a single malt from the yoichi distillery, which aims to make peated and heavily peated malt whiskey. The Miyagikyo Distillery makes lightly peated and unpeated malt and grain whisky, while the Taketsuru is a blend of the two.

This whiskey should therefore be on the heavier, with more of the peat flavour coming through on top of the malt and cask influence.

It comes in at 43% ABV, but doesn’t have a lot of information about its age statement, or if it’s been chill filtered or had colour added, so let’s get into the tasting notes!

Nikka Yoichi Single Malt Whisky Tasting notes
Nose
There's some herbal malt, with charred oak and some apple pastry notes on the nose, with a little bit of citrus rounding out the peat smoke, which is subtle, but definitely present

Palate
The smoke is far less subtle on the palate, with an almost salty taste to it, balanced againsty some red fruits, and lemon citrus. The peat isn't overpowering, just a counterpoint, but the palate is relatively simple.

Finish
The finish is short, but adds a touch of melon and oak tannins to balance out the maritime peat smoke.

Overall, this whiskey is ok, it's not great by any stretch of the imagination, and I wish that it had leant into the peat smoke far more than it did, as it just feels a little "middle of the road", and definitely overpriced anywhere outside of Japan.
