New EV Research Guides Firefighter Suppression Decisions

Suppressing a passenger EV fire raises questions that standard vehicle firefighting tactics don't fully answer: when are conventional tactics effective, and when do conditions call for specialized tools? This video previews new full-scale experiments from UL Research Institutes' Fire Safety Research Institute designed to give firefighters evidence-based guidance for suppression decisions.
Working with fire service leaders and EV industry experts, ULRI principal research engineer Adam Barowy led experiments to identify the key considerations that shape suppression strategy on an EV fire scene, including fire location, resource availability and exposure risks.
Those findings supported development of the EV Fire Tactical Decision Aid, a tool built to give firefighters clear guidance on what to look for during vehicle size-up, so decisions at the scene are grounded in tested evidence rather than assumption. Paired with the full tactical considerations report, the Decision Aid supports safer, more confident decision-making from the moment crews arrive on scene.
