Unfortunately, installing Linux on an Optimus laptop still isn't very intuitive and straight forward. After installing the Nvidia driver, there's tearing. It's "easy" once you know how, but doesn't help a new user installing for the first time. In short, the steps are as follows:
1. Install Kubuntu 20.04 (LTS - Long Term Support).
2. Add the GPU driver PPA: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:graphics-drivers
3. Perform an update: sudo apt update
4. Install the Nvidia drivers: sudo apt install nvidia-driver-440
5. Reboot: sudo reboot
6. Open /etc/default/grub in your favorite editor.
7. GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nvidia-drm.modeset=1"
8. sudo update-grub
9. Reboot. Job done!
You can then change between the Nvidia and Intel GPUs using:
sudo prime-select nvidia (or sudo prime-select intel)
You can also use Nvidia Settings (a GUI app) and then choose between the following "Prime Profiles":
NVIDIA (Perofrmance mode).
NVIDIA On-Demand.
Intel (Power Saving Mode).
My next video will show how to install and configure the CUDA toolkit.
Enjoy Linux!
