इतिहासकारों में सिन्धु घाटी सभ्यता के पतन के किसी एक कारण पर सहमति नहीं है। अलग-अलग विद्वानों ने अलग-अलग कारण बताए हैं।
भीषण बाढ़
यह सबसे पुराना और प्रचलित सिद्धांत है जो सिन्धु सभ्यता के अंत का कारण माना जाता है ।
सर जॉन मार्शल, अर्नेस्ट मैके और एस.आर. राव ने बाढ़ को इस सभ्यता के पतन का कारण माना है ।
बाढ़ को इस सभ्यता के अंत का कारण इसलिए माना जाता है क्योंकि मोहनजोदड़ो की खुदाई में गाद (Silt) की कई परतें मिली हैं। इससे पता चलता है कि मोहनजोदड़ो शहर कम से कम 7 बार बाढ़ से नष्ट हुआ और फिर बसाया गया। अंततः लोग तंग आकर वहां से चले गए।

Historians do not agree on any single reason for the decline of the Indus Valley Civilization. Different scholars have given different reasons.
Massive Floods
This is the oldest and most popular theory considered to be the cause of the end of the Indus Civilization.
Sir John Marshall, Ernest Mackay, and S.R. Rao believed that floods were the reason for the decline of this civilization. Floods are considered the cause because many layers of silt were found during the excavation of Mohenjo-Daro. This shows that the city of Mohenjo-Daro was destroyed by floods at least 7 times and then rebuilt. Finally, people got tired of it and moved away.

आर्यों का आक्रमण
यह सिद्धांत काफी समय तक लोकप्रिय रहा, लेकिन अब इसे चुनौती दी जा रही है।
गार्डन चाइल्ड और मॉर्टिमर व्हीलर ने आर्यों के आक्रमण को इस सभ्यता के पतन का कारण माना ।
आर्यों के आक्रमण को इस सभ्यता के अंत का कारण माने के पीछे यह तर्क है कि मोहनजोदड़ो की गलियों में बेतरतीब पड़े हुए कंकाल मिले हैं, जिससे लगता है कि किन्हीं बाहरी लोगों ने उन पर हमला किया था। क्योंकि ऋग्वेद में इंद्र को 'पुरंदर' (किलों को तोड़ने वाला) कहा गया है, जिसे व्हीलर ने हड़प्पा के दुर्गों को तोड़ने से जोड़ लिया।

Aryan Invasion
This theory was popular for a long time, but now it is being challenged.
Gordon Childe and Mortimer Wheeler believed that the Aryan invasion was the reason for the decline of this civilization.
The argument behind this theory is that scattered skeletons were found lying randomly in the streets of Mohenjo-Daro. This makes it look like outsiders attacked them. Also, in the Rigveda, the god Indra is called 'Purandara' (Destroyer of Forts). Wheeler connected this title to the destruction of the forts of Harappa.
