Before the General Strike of August 1972, shop assistants and semi-skilled workers were on very low pay and found it difficult to make ends meet.
That’s the recollection of Elio Victor, who was an executive committee member of the Transport and General Workers Union.
On this the 50th anniversary of the general strike, Mr Victor recalls that the main issue was not bad pay per se but the "appalling" working conditions and the prevailing colonial attitude of subjugating local workers.
Mr Victor represented the Association of Clerical, Technical & Supervisory Staff. He told our reporter Jonathan Scott about the “unbelievable camaraderie” and team spirit among the organisers of the strike, who played a role in developing the trade union movement in Gibraltar.
