Notes:
—The controversy involving “The Song Is Over”, Zak and Roger Daltrey—
March 30: during a performance of “The Song Is Over”, Daltrey stopped the song and declared: “To sing that song, I do need to hear the key, and I can’t. There’s no pitch here. I’ve got is drums going ‘boom, boom, boom.’ I can’t sing to that. I’m sorry, guys.” Thus, it seems as if Starkey’s “overplaying”.
April 16: The Who have confirmed the dismissal of drummer Zak Starkey. Zak was dismissed following reports of a dispute with Roger Daltrey that became public during the band’s performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Zak Starkey has been with the Who in a full-time capacity since 1996; he drummed on the band’s records “Endless Wire” and “Who”. In an Instagram post on April 13, Starkey claimed the decision to let him go came from front man Roger Daltrey being unhappy at “the drummer’s performance” at their Royal Albert Hall shows last month; Daltrey “is bringing formal charges of overplaying,” Starkey said.
April 17: Zak Starkey released a statement that further put the blame on Roger Daltrey. “I’m very proud of my near thirty years with the Who. Filling the shoes of my Godfather, ‘uncle Keith,’ has been the biggest honor and I remain their biggest fan,” he said. “They’ve been like family to me.” and “After playing those songs with the band for so many decades, I’m surprised and saddened anyone would have an issue with my performance that night, but what can you do?”
April 19: Pete Townshend announced Starkey’s return on the group’s official website and across social media, writing: “News Flash! Who Backs Zak!He's not being asked to step down from The Who. There have been some communication issues, personal and private on all sides, that needed to be dealt with, and these have been aired happily.”
April 21: Roger Daltrey during the London Palladium show of his 'Alive and Kicking and Having Fun!' solo tour, Daltrey paused to tell the crowd: "The last few weeks in my life, I've felt like I've been starring in an episode of 'The Twilight Zone. I've been reading about me in the press, doing things I don't remember ever doing." Daltrey added that quotes attributed to an "inside source," regarding the Who's reported firing and rehiring of its longtime drummer, amounted to "fake news." and "I am not guilty. I have not got a press spokesman. I speak for myself." He then added: "And f--- social media. I've never done it, I've never wanted to do it — it's taken civilization to the pits."
May 18: Pete has confirmed (again) the dismissal of drummer Zak Starkey.
