Ninety-five percent of its land is ancient forest within the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. It's the kind of place where time genuinely stops, and for one day, this incredible village belonged to our couple and their guests who had travelled from the United States to celebrate here.

NIPPONIA Kosuge is a beautifully renovated 150-year-old traditional Japanese residence, the "Ōya" or "big house", reimagined as part of an innovative concept that transforms the entire village into one interconnected hotel. The couple exchanged vows in the Japanese garden, with the mountains and bamboo groves as their backdrop, before sitting down to a Michelin-starred dinner crafted by the resident chef using seasonal ingredients sourced almost entirely from the village and surrounding region.

The bride wore a Sailor Moon headdress that was absolutely iconic, a nod to the anime that shaped her, and throughout the celebration, Studio Ghibli scores and beloved anime soundtracks wove through every moment, giving the entire day a cinematic, otherworldly quality. Sailor Moon meets Spirited Away, in the most real and intimate way imaginable.

This is what a destination wedding in Japan can look like when you move beyond the expected.

Kosuge Village (小菅村) is one of the most remarkable hidden locations in Japan. A mountain village of approximately 700 residents in northeastern Yamanashi Prefecture, it sits at the source of the Tama River, the same river that flows 135 kilometres through Tokyo to Tokyo Bay. The village is part of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, surrounded by primeval forest, clear mountain streams, and an extraordinary quiet you simply cannot find elsewhere.

NIPPONIA Kosuge is a dispersed hotel concept. Traditional homes renovated into guest accommodations, with the village itself as the experience. The main residence, the Ōya, is a 150-year-old house once owned by a family that made their fortune in silk. Every meal is prepared with ingredients from local farms, rivers, and forests.
