The historical context of the Second Amendment is rooted in the experiences of the American colonists, who had a deep mistrust of standing armies, based on their experiences with British rule. The colonists believed that a militia composed of ordinary citizens was a critical defense against tyranny. This perspective was strongly influenced by English common law and the philosophical writings of thinkers like John Locke, who emphasized the natural right to self-defense.

In its early years, the Second Amendment was primarily associated with the collective right of states to maintain militias. The term "militia" referred to all able-bodied men who could be called upon to defend the state. During the 19th century, the focus began to shift towards the individual's right to bear arms, though this interpretation was not universally accepted.
