Once Japan’s gateway to the world, Nagasaki flourished as a centre of international trade and cultural exchange, especially with Dutch and Portuguese merchants.
The city is perhaps most known for its tragic role in World War II, as the second site of an atomic bombing. Today, we toured through Peace Park and the Atomic Bomb Museum with our local guide Jonathon. These stand as powerful reminders of the past and symbols of a peaceful future.
We also went for a walk through central Nagasaki and across the Spectacles Bridge built in 1634, and so named because its twin arches reflect in the water to resemble a pair of eyeglasses.

Let’s face it we have worked hard all out lives, sacrificed a lot willingly, but for the last few years Darren and I have made it a mission to see the world while we are still fit and healthy. We leave family and friends for a while and go exploring for adventure, to embrace new cultures and meet new people.
We find cruising perfect for this – unpack once, don’t need to think about what we are doing for dinner, cocktails on tap, sea days to relax, meet people around the trivia tables, dissolve into pools and experience great shows every night - all while they ferry us from one exciting destination to the next.
This year’s big holiday involved back-to-back cruises on the Diamond Princess to Japan (not our first visit) and 2 new destinations Busan in South Korea and Taipei in Taiwan. Here’s a sample of our experiences.
