NMDSI: Augmented Reading: Criticism, Computation, and New Approaches to Literature

Описание: The digital humanities sit at the crossroads of computer science and the humanities and have supported a remarkable diversity of teaching, scholarship and service pursued by a diverse group of leaders who are shaping the field’s values and priorities.

During this session, Mark Algee-Hewitt will explore how the use of computation, machine learning and data science are changing the ways that we study and understand literature and culture. Recent work in the humanities seeks to combine the traditional practices of close reading with the analysis of patterns in the language of hundreds, or hundreds of thousands, of books. Through a series of examples from his work at the Stanford Literary Lab, he will discuss how these new areas of research are changing the way that we think about writing, culture, and art, and will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of using computational methods to study these most human creations.
