​The Story of Their Marriage
​The Meeting: After being banished from his home in Mangad, Mandappan traveled to Coorg to stay with his uncle. While working there as an oil merchant, he met the beautiful Chemmarathi near the Velarkote river. Despite caste differences and initial family hesitation, Mandappan was determined to marry her.
​The Relationship: They were known to be deeply in love, but their marriage was also marked by intense arguments. Chemmarathi was strong-willed, and Mandappan’s long business trips often led to misunderstandings and suspicion.
​The Fatal Quarrel: The myth culminates in a final argument. One night, Mandappan returned late, and an angry Chemmarathi refused to open the door. When she finally served him food, the rice contained stones and hair—an ill omen. In her anger, she even cursed that he might be cut into sixty-four pieces in battle.
​The Sacrifice and Deification
​When war broke out shortly after their fight, Mandappan went to the battlefield to prove his bravery. He fought heroically but was eventually killed through treachery.
​The Sati: Upon hearing of his death and seeing his severed finger (bearing his wedding ring) fall into her courtyard, a heartbroken Chemmarathi realized her mistake. Overcome with grief and love, she leapt into his funeral pyre.
​Becoming Gods: It is believed that the couple attained divinity together. In Theyyam performances, the Chemmarathi Thara (an altar) represents his wife, and the performer often interacts with it or stares into the fire, symbolizing their eternal bond and the fire that consumed them.
