He uses Astra theme which is lightweight and fast. I use Generatepress (also lightweight and fast). Either is fine. Both are free with (I believe) premium options. I use the premium version because I wanted to change where the featured image appeared on the webpage. Is that necessary? Absolutely not.
Other resources:
Canva - for graphics. I have the pro version (£10 per month) because it allows you to download images with transparent backgrounds and a few more photo options. It’s incredibly convenient but you can 100% find free ways to download transparent PNGs (if you even need them - I don’t really use them for my website) and search through the various free photo sites.
